Paradise, Pacific Northwest Modern
The archetypal garden, Paradise, derives its name and symbolism from the old Persian, Pardeiza, meaning an enclosed area. Built by Cyrus the Great, the ruins of the earliest surviving garden date to 550 B.C. Incorporating architecture and planting, water rills and shade-giving Pavilions, Cyrus’s garden offered the blueprint to later garden development.
While the Persian garden was born as a retreat from the harsh landscape, here in the Pacific Northwest, our modern interpretation is intended to enhance and harmonize with the landscape. Just as Cyrus originally intended, our version of Paradise can provide a place of spiritual solace, a meeting place for friends or an adjunct to the house. |
